Active Citizens
We understand that as your child approaches young adulthood, your focus shifts toward the future. This pathway is designed specifically to give your child the tools, qualifications, and confidence they need to transition successfully into college, training, and the wider community.
What is an Active Citizen?
An Active Citizen is a learner who is actively preparing to step out into the world. They are building the practical skills to take care of themselves, communicate effectively in public and social settings, and earn the accreditations that open doors to further education.
Our goal is to help them step out of school and onto their next step towards adulthood with the highest possible level of independence.
Key Areas for Development
To ensure a smooth transition to further education and adulthood, our curriculum and individual targets for these learners focus on four priority areas:
- Community & Personal Independence: Mastering daily living tasks, from personal organisation and budgeting to travelling safely and independently.
- Functional Communication: Developing conversational skills, reading practical texts (like timetables or forms), and using written communication for real-world purposes.
- Targeted Accreditations: Earning recognised certificates that demonstrate capability to future colleges, training providers, or employers.
- Problem-Solving & Resilience: Learning how to manage unexpected changes, resolve conflicts, and make informed decisions independently.
How We Support Your Child’s Growth
We believe that learning for this pathway should be functional and rewarding. Learner timetables are carefully balanced to support their personal and academic growth:
- Functional Skills (Entry Level): We support your child to gain essential qualifications in English, Maths and Science. Rather than abstract academic theories, we focus on the skills they actually need for life and college, such as managing personal money, reading safety signs, and communicating clearly with professionals.
- ASDAN Frameworks: We use nationally recognised ASDAN programmes to validate your child's practical achievements. Through these frameworks, they earn certificates in personal development, work preparation, and community action.
- A Bridge to College: We work closely with local colleges and providers. Your child will experience familiarisation visits, transition support, and target-setting that aligns directly with what further education courses expect from incoming students.
What This Looks Like in the Classroom
In the classroom, learning is practical, collaborative, and forward-facing. We balance essential academic progress with vocational and life skills, using Functional Skills (Entry Level) and ASDAN frameworks to structure their achievements.
On a typical day, you will see:
- Accredited Learning Sessions: Dedicated focus on Entry Level Functional Skills in Maths and English, taught through practical lenses like calculating change, measuring ingredients, or writing emails.
- ASDAN Portfolio Building: Students working on collaborative or individual challenges that build a portfolio of evidence, proving their readiness for college and adulthood.
- Social Communication Scenarios: Structured group work, debates, and role-play activities designed to build conversational stamina, team-working skills, and workplace etiquette.
- Real-World Problem Solving: Lessons that move beyond textbooks. For example, planning a journey using a local bus app, managing a mock budget for a class event, or practicing an interview for a college placement.
- Student-Led Leadership: Learners taking responsibility for classroom roles, organizing community initiatives, or mentoring younger students to build leadership and civic pride.
What Success Looks Like
Success on this pathway is about readiness for the future. We celebrate when a student:
- Earns qualifications (Functional Skills or ASDAN) that proves their capability.
- Navigates a social or community situation independently, such as ordering food or asking for directions.
- Expresses their own aspirations for college, work, or living arrangements clearly and confidently.
- Manages a daily routine with minimal adult prompting or supervision.
